MomsKnow is a gathering place for moms of all ages, experience levels, and backgrounds to share information about being mom. The developers are two 20-something sisters who are just starting out on the adventure of motherhood. Kristin, the older sister, is expecting her first child, in March of 2008. Laura, the younger sister, gave birth to her first child, Kaleb, in January 2008. As research-aholics, both sisters realized that gathering advice from traditional internet websites and books is tedious and not reassuring--especially to new moms. The best advice comes from real moms, moms that know!

Packing For Labor
At least a few weeks before your due date it is a good idea to pack for labor. Preparing in advance will insure you don't leave anything behind. I recommend packing two to three bags (they don't need to be large). One for labor and delivery, one for postpartum, and one for dad. Packing separate bags allows you to leave postpartum items in the car until they are needed and keeps all dad's items in one place. After the delivery dad can bring unneeded items in the labor bag back to the car and pick-up the postpartum bag. Alternatively you can use one bag for all items. While these lists are not exhaustive and some women will choose to leave items out, it should give you a jumpstart in packing your personal bag. Remember the goal is to bring items that will make you feel more comfortable away from home.

Labor & Delivery Bag

• Waterproof pad or towels for the car (incase your water breaks)
• Your birth plan
• Hospital registration forms and insurance card (if you are not pre-registered)
• Reference materials you may have from research or birth classes
• Comfort and distraction items for labor (birthing ball, music, massage oils, massagers, focal point and/or pictures, suckers or other special labor foods)
• Slipper socks (comfortable, warm, non-slip)
• Clothes from home you may want to wear (remember they will probably be ruined in the labor process)
• Basic Toiletries (brush, hair ties, chap stick, toothbrush & toothpaste, shampoo & conditioner, make-up, etc)
• Glasses and/or contacts (if you wear them)
• Pillows, Washcloths, and Towels (Most hospitals only provide minimal linens. Bring your own to make labor more comfortable. Remember to bring bright colored items that won't get confused with the hospital linens.)
• List of people to call during and after the delivery. (Try setting up a phone tree in advance so you can alert a few key people who will be responsible for contacting other family and friends)

Postpartum Bag

• Breastfeeding supplies (breastfeeding pillow, lanolin, nursing bras or tanks, breastfeeding book, nursing pads)
• Outfit for mom's trip home (Remember you will still look about 6 months pregnant so pick comfortable and loose clothes. Don't forget clean socks, undies, and a sweater or jacket depending on the climate.)
• Outfit for baby's trip home (Don't forget a hat, socks or booties, and a blanket)
• Baby items for the drive home (diapers, wipes, changing pad, burp clothes, etc)
• Car seat

Dad's Bag

• Basic Toiletries (brush, hair ties, toothbrush & toothpaste, shampoo & conditioner, etc)
• Glasses, contacts and medications regularly taken
• Pen, paper or notebook and a watch
• Snacks for mom and dad
• Cash and coin for vending machine and incidentals
• Cameras, phones, charges, batteries, film etc. (Let dad concentrate on the electronics while you concentrate on labor!)
• A change of clothes for dad (This is especially important if he will not be able to travel home and will be spending nights at the hospital.)
• Swim trunks for laboring with mom in the shower or tub.
